The Institute for Economic and Social Development(IESD),established in January 1990 as a non-profit autonomous institution by a group of senior social scientists and policy analysts of Jharkhand.. The thrust of the institute is to integrate the social science research skills in initiating, complementing, participating and furthering the social, economic and political changes of the societies with an emphasis on equity and justice.IESD Envisions a society free from poverty and inequality.IESD has full academic autonomy, is designed to function democratically and is proud of its impeccable record of public accountability.IESD is dedicated to a systematic and scholarly study of contemporary social, political and economic issues from an inter-disciplinary perspective.The Institute makes its research findings and recommendations available to national and state governments, policy makers, UN organizations and civil societies, so as to help them to make their decisions ground based.The Institute seeks to integrate academic vigour with the struggle for change, hence the motto of the organization is integrating Research.

It is rightly recognized that policy-making in India requires a great deal of systematizing and active lobbying of scholarship. Aware of practical difficulties in connecting research to policy, IESD from the very beginning has established itself as a credible and accountable institution to provide policy feedback to the Government of India and the state governments. In addition, ISEC has regularly contributed and assisted central, state and local governments by providing advice on important issues.
